CME brings Micro WTI weekly options to five expiries a week

CME Group has launched Monday-through-Thursday Micro WTI weekly options, extending the smaller-sized crude-oil contract to an expiry on every trading day.

Effective for the 5 October trade date, CME listed new Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Weekly Micro WTI options on CME Globex and for clearing via CME ClearPort. Friday weekly and monthly expiries already existed, giving the product an expiry on each trading day.

The launch coincides with a four-week listing cycle and an expanded strike schedule for the Friday contract.

FMI WORLD analysis: Daily expiries let users isolate short-dated oil-price risk around inventory releases, geopolitical events and policy decisions without carrying as much unwanted time exposure. The 100-barrel Micro WTI scale broadens access, but a denser expiry grid fragments activity across more contracts and raises the importance of liquidity concentration, market-making quality and expiry-day controls.

Energy traders, commodity funds, commercial hedgers, market makers, brokers, clearing members and risk teams using CME’s WTI complex.

Open interest and bid–ask depth by weekday; whether liquidity concentrates around event days; clearing-member treatment of short-dated exposure; and whether the added expiries complement rather than dilute Friday and monthly contracts.
